Places to go and things to do in and around Onchan

Onchan is a great location for everything you need. It is within walking distance of Douglas and is ideally situated for travelling to other island destinations.

There are two local pubs in the village, The Manx Arms and The Archibald Knox.  The Manx Arms often has entertainment on a Saturday night and shows most of the Football and Sports channels. The Archibald Knox serves food and has an outdoor seating area. Both are only a couple of minutes walk from the cottage.

There are a number of ATMs in Onchan dispensing Manx currency, outside Shoprite Supermarket, at the Co-Op on Main Road and at Corkills Garage.  ATM’s dispensing English currency are available at the Isle of Man Steam Packet terminal and at Ronaldsway Airport.

Onchan has plenty of places to eat in or pick up food to eat at the cottage.  Views Café and Restaurant at Onchan Park is a lovely restaurant with a great menu.  The Archibald Knox serves food and has a garden to eat out in the summer.  In the Village Walk there are a number of food outlets  such as Domimo’s, Fryer’s fish and chips, Loong Tan Chinese takeaway and The Nutty Chef café. Bella Pizza is next to the Co-Op on Main Road.

If you prefer to cook for yourself there are a number of shops that you can walk to.  Shoprite (which is the local supermarket here on the island) is the largest and is located beside Village Walk. The Co Op is a busy little shop just on Main Road. Corkills Garage is on the mini roundabout at the top of Summerhill and is open until midnight selling a limited selection of food and drink.

The Old Stable is a great base from which to explore. There are a number of Glens and nature trails to discover in Onchan details of these can be found here.  Turn left on Main Road to the nature trail at Onchan Wetlands or the railway at Groudle Glen. See more details about Glens in Onchan here.

Turn right on Main Road and Summerhill Glen is only a short walk away.  In the 1980’s a fairy grotto was created near to the top end of the glen and this is still popular today, with its pretty illuminations.  Further details can be found here.

Cycling is very popular on the island and getting on a bike is a great way to get around and visit places. Heading down Royal Avenue or Summerhill will take you down onto Douglas promenade. This is a popular place for cyclists especially for families and those that like a flat and safe terrain. Riding beside the beach along the promenade is beautiful when the sun is shining.
For those who like a bit more of a challenge there are many other cycle routes for you to choose from, more information head to the Visit Isle of Man page here
The King Edward Bay golf course is about a 5 miniute drive away, information can be seen on their website here.
There is a mini golf course and crazy golf course at Onchan Park together with a great children’s play area and boating lake. You can also hire go-karts and watch Stock car racing during the summer from Onchan raceway located beside the park. See here for activities and events in Onchan. Heading out of Onchan towards Laxey you will find  The Fun Barn and Laserblast which are indoor play areas for children so great when the weather is not so good.
